Director’s Award recipients serve as “a light to others”

“This is a life moment,” said Director of Education David Hansen at a reception on May 15 honouring the recipients of the 2019 “Director’s Awards for Outstanding Dedication to Students and Staff.” This year’s celebration recognized 80 individuals from all schools and work sites, and job categories.

“You were selected for this recognition, not by me, not by the superintendents, but directly by your colleagues,” he explained.

“You didn’t fake your way here or default your way here. You were chosen by those who work most closely with you. These are truly your awards. And I think that’s what makes them significant.”

The Director’s Awards were established many years ago to recognize on an annual basis one or two staff members from each school/site who promote Catholic values through example, exhibit excellence in their work, achieve exceptional results in their duties, give generously of their time, and serve as role models and sources of inspiration to their colleagues.

“From my seat as the Director, I really get to see a broad view of the goodness of this board pretty much on a daily basis,” said Hansen. “These awards are a chance for me, on behalf of our senior administrative team, to say thank you for that goodness and to say thank you for your dedication.”

Noting that the recipients, while no doubt honoured, were probably also feeling a little bit embarrassed and “a tad uncomfortable” by the recognition, Hansen joked “to make it slightly worse, in a second we’re going to get you to come up here and pose for a picture.”

He said that while “we are called to shine like stars in the world” – in the words of St. Paul – often people don’t realize the difference they are making at their schools and work sites.

“But look at the names in the program tonight,” he said. “We know you. We know what your colleagues see in you and how deserving you are of this recognition, even if you don’t see it yourself.”

“This is your colleagues, your co-workers identifying that in your everyday walk through life, you have, through your words and your actions and your attitude, carried yourself as a light for others.”
